Peter’s brightly tinted frog box figurine is based on tree frogs found in the world’s rainforests. Colourful creatures often use their vibrancy as a warning to predators to keep away. While Peter was researching this model, he learned that there is a word for it – Aposematic. Crypsis, on the other hand, describes creatures that blend in with their surroundings to hide from predators. The letters K.I.T.W are inscribed on this fixed edition box figurine and reference the eccentric artist Kit Williams, best known for an illustrated book containing clues to the whereabouts of a hidden golden hare. Peter still has his old copy. A recent radio programme about Kit’s life prompted him to go online and discover, once and for all, the secrets of the book.

This duckling box figurine reminds Peter of the tranquility of early summer, fishing at his favourite lake. His excuse for not catching anything? He was distracted by all of the young mallards, coots and moorhens paddling about. At the time of carving, a certain World Cup was underway and some of the early results for the USA team are inscribed. As usual, UK football fans went from believing they could win the Jules Rimet Trophy at the beginning of the tournament to pretending the World Cup never took place just three weeks later. Other inscriptions include “dad”, referring to Father’s Day June 20, and “70-68”, recording the record length of the fifth set at Wimbledon, when John Isner finally beat Nicolas Mahut. A childhood favourite of Peter’s, Daffy Duck, can be found inside. This 300 piece edition is divided between 150 black Version 1’s and 150 brown Version 2’s. Peter couldn’t decide which coloration he preferred, so we produced both!

When Master Carver Peter Calvesbert read that the world’s most expensive coffee comes from the back side of the Palm Civet, his respect for the human race fell yet another notch. Kopi Luwak is made from the beans of coffee berries that are eaten, digested, and then defecated by the Palm Civet. Peter’s 2011 signed and numbered Black Box shows the Civet making a cup of “instant” coffee!

Every time Master Carver Peter Calvesbert sees lions on television, they are hunting or feasting. They are known as apex predators because they are at the top of the food chain. But every time Peter sees one at a zoo or safari park, they are always fast asleep. You hear the terms “brave as a lion” or “ferocious as a lion” but never “lazy as a lion”. Lions are actually inactive 20 hours a day. So this model shows lions how we always see them, flat out. Names of lions from Peter’s childhood are inscribed: “Clarence” (the cross-eyed lion), “Aslan” (a C.S.Lewis character), and “Elsa” (from Born Free). Another inscription refers to lions’ classification as Vulnerable (Vu) on the red list.

This piece was signed by Peter while he was visiting Newport! Peter is pleased to report that the playful otter is actually increasing in number in the U.K. Having been hunted for years, and then nearly wiped out by pollution and pesticides in the 1950’s, these semi-aquatic mammals do deserve a break! Otters have now been spotted in every county in England, although Peter has only seen one in the wild. 20%, written on the lid, refers to the otter eating up to a fifth of its body weight in fish each day. The interior portrays the remains of one of those meals. Holt, mentioned on the lid, is the name of the otter’s home. Its memorable Latin name, Lutra Lutra, is also inscribed.

What can be said about this model? While Peter acknowledges that we’ve all seen “scooching” pooches, he wishes he hadn’t researched why they do this. He also suggests that you never look at “how to express a dog’s anal gland” on YouTube. The gland does have a use though - it acts as the dog’s business card. The ten stars on the collar are a reference to the ten largest stars in the night sky, with the biggest being Sirius (the Dog Star) in Canis Major. Open the lid of this 250 piece edition (125 tinted with brown stain and 125 with black) to reveal a bottle of carpet shampoo.

The Sphinx is a relatively new breed. Originating in Canada in 1966, a hairless kitten named "Prune" was mated with his mother, becoming the primogenitor of this "naked" cat. Despite their odd appearance, they fetch very high prices, perhaps due to their cuddliness. Because the Sphinx cat has no pelt to keep it warm, it seeks body heat and is known to sleep with its owner under the covers. Peter has carved his model in the pose of the Egyptian Sphinx. "Mr Bigglesworth" is a reference to the hairless cat belonging to Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers' films. "Blepharospasm" is uncontrollable blinking that is effectively treated with Botox. Inside this box figurine is a Botox syringe, an attempt to reduce the cat's wrinkles.

Bears are so lucky! A day’s salmon fishing in Scotland would cost us humans a small fortune. And bears don’t even have to get a license. Master carver Peter Calvesbert, an avid fisherman, is jealous. We’ve all seen documentaries of bears scooping salmon from rivers, so Peter wondered how a bear cub would cope if there were too many fish to deal with. In “Sushi Bar”, nine lucky salmon manage to escape the bear’s clutches but a tenth is about to leap straight into his paw. So many wildlife programmes these days show animals wearing radio collars to help research and tracking, so Peter thought it was about time one of his animals had one too. Another sign of man’s presence is the beer can floating down the river. Inscribed on the lid is the bear’s Latin name. HK collector Mary K. DeMayo also receives mention as a thank you for always remembering Peter’s birthday. Lift the lid to see a fish with a bear-sized bite missing.

The Eurasian badger, Meles Meles, is a mammal indigenous to most of Europe and to many parts of Asia. It is particularly abundant in Britain. Master Carver Peter Calvesbert says, “Maybe it is the solitude, but a large part of my crepuscular life has been spent watching these creatures.” Inscribed on the lid are “Hic...Hic…Hic….Hic…Hic”. These remind Peter of the first time he took his daughter Millie to see some badgers. He had stressed the importance of being very quiet, when she developed what seemed to be the loudest hiccups possible. Needless to say, no badgers were seen that evening. The interior portrays Peter, hidden in a bush, binoculars to hand, as a badger emerges from its sett.

Peter chose beavers as the theme for his 2011 Romance Annual for two reasons. Firstly, beavers pair for life, a requirement for the Romance pieces, and secondly, he hadn’t carved a beaver themed box figurine since 1995’s “Damnable Plot”. “Tunnel of Love”, a fixed edition of 400, is replete with inscriptions: “Castor Canadensis” is the scientific name for the Canadian Beaver, “lodge” is the home of the beaver, “kits” are the young, and “merkin” – well, we suggest you look that up on Wikipedia. Moving swiftly along, the interior shows a beaver with a chainsaw, a reference to its ability to fell trees quickly. Look carefully at the beaver tails and you may be able to see the initials of two HK founders.

During Peter’s 2009 “Summer of Love” signing tour, he spotted a small wicker basket at host My Doll Shop’s Florida store. He knew it would look great in a carving, so proprietor Lynn McEnany kindly gave him two. Upon Peter’s return to England, one was immediately devoured by his terrier Bart, but the other served as a model for “Wicker & Whiskers”. Four adorable (“sigh”) kittens were added, along with a dead mouse in the interior. Mount Dora, the location of Lynn’s shop, receives mention on the lid. Also inscribed on the lid is “Borg”, not in reference to the former #1 from Sweden but meaning boy or girl. Only Lynn from My Doll Shop may know the answer!
